On Saturday 9th December 1989 Whitley Bay beat Preston North End 2-0 in the FA Cup 2nd Round. It was one of the greatest days in the club’s history and the game was featured on BBC Match of the Day with commentary from John Motson. In the Bay side that day were Andy Gowens and Ian Chandler, two players who later became Whitley managers, both leading the club to FA Vase glory.
