In a hastily arranged friendly, a Whitley Bay squad consisting of first and reserve team players got some valuable game time at Ashington tonight (Tuesday). For the first hour there was nothing to choose between the sides with Robertson and Potter (penalty) on target for Whitley with the score tied at 2-2. Ashington brought on several first team regulars during the second half and their experience made the difference as they scored four times in the final 20 minutes with Ben Harmison netting a quickfire hat trick. Apart from the two goalscorers, the first teamers involved for Whitley were Ross Wilkinson, Matty McCarthy, Liam Brooks and Kyle Patton. Familiar faces from the reserves included former Vase winner Gareth Williams and second half sub Mark Minto.
