It was a very disappointed Nathan Haslam who gave his thoughts on yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at Newton Aycliffe, when a stoppage time penalty gave the home side a narrow victory.
“It was massively disappointing. We just didn’t have a good start, there was the back pass that put us under pressure and that was the start of a bad sequence of events and then losing Callum Anderson after ten minutes meant a reshape. It seems to be happening a lot, but the lads stuck in and in the second half we certainly had our chances to take the game but in the end obviously it was not good enough.
“We were really stern with them at half time; we can always have one or two having an off day but it was five or six and it was in key areas, players were hiding.
“After half time we started off really brightly, we got the goal, but for whatever reason we sat back again that put us under quite a lot of pressure and a couple of mistakes has cost us in the end.
“Josh (MacDonald)has done brilliantly, we knew he wasn’t going to last 90 minutes but I think every time he got the ball he went at them but we just didn’t take the chances that he gave us…but he’s done very well for the goal.
“They (Newton Aycliffe) have had a good run of form, they’re a good team and they’ve pressed and pressed and that’s the sign of a team with confidence. We need that bit of experience to step up and shore things up but it’s disappointing, for whatever reason we didn’t do that. We’d have taken a draw but we shot ourselves in the foot. I don’t know what we were thinking with the throw in, then they counter attacked and got the goal. The message always is when you’re buying time, go down the line but we didn’t do that and it’s lost us the game.
“It’s a big plus having James Proctor back because Craig McFarlane’s been injured and now he’s on holiday for two weeks so it’s nice to have ‘Proc’ back because it gives a bit of dynamic that we need on the wing. We’ve got a week’s break now, we need to work on a few things, nurse a few injuries and hopefully next week against Shildon we’ll be ready to put a performance in.”
