Ten years ago – Bay hit five past Biggleswade to go one step from Wembley

Just seven days after victory in their twice postponed FA Vase 5th Round tie against Stratford, Whitley welcomed Biggleswade Town to Hillheads in the last eight of the competition. Despite the importance of the tie, a midweek fixture had been squeezed in between the two Vase games. With little time to prepare for the tie, this first ever game between the sides was a trip into the unknown, and for the Bedfordshire visitors it was the furthest they had ever reached in the competition.

With almost 1300 fans in the ground expecting a closely contested Quarter Final, Whitley produced a devastating first half display to lead 4-0 at the interval, shattering Biggleswade hopes. David Coulson with two, Phill Bell and Lee Kerr with a penalty put Whitley into an impregnable position. The visitors rallied and pulled a goal back but Paul Chow – inevitably – got his name on the score sheet as Whitley won 5-2, cruising into the semi finals where Lowestoft awaited for a second successive year.
