Speaking after the game, Andy Gowens was clearly unhappy with Whitley’s performance against Bishop Auckland but did not point to his side’s goalkeeping injuries as a reason for the defeat.
“Over all I’m disappointed with that performance today. We weren’t at it, we couldn’t keep the ball. It was like a Whickham again where we got outworked by them. They came and did a job on us and I’ve told the players it needs to stop. We cannot put up with that, it’s not good enough, not good enough at all. Yes, after we got our equaliser we were on top but their second goal burst the bubble and we were struggling after that. The heads went down a little bit and it’s not good enough, we should be doing a lot better.
“We seemed to go with long balls, we just went route one which is not like us and then when we tried to get it down we couldn’t keep it, it was just coming back and we were losing it. Hopefully it was just an off day.”
With regard to the goalkeeper injuries, he added “It’s very rarely one keeper gets injured, never mind two. Actually it was touch and go whether I was going to put Liam (Powell) on the bench anyway, but we’ve got an able one in Luke who was tremendous when he went in goal….though maybe one or two of his saves were done for the cameras! He was fantastic that’s for sure!”
