Bay comfortable in victory over Millers

Whitley lifted the gloom of a damp summer’s afternoon at Hillheads as they continued their unbeaten start to pre-season with a 3-0 victory over Derbyshire side New Mills.

Persistent drizzle failed to dampen the spirits of the Bay side which included two trialists, one playing in defence and the other a striker.

Callum Patton gave Whitley a 9th minute lead with a shot from out on the right after being played through by Alex Kempster and they might have added more goals shortly afterwards but Tom potter sawa shot crash off the post before Kempster was twice denied, once by the keeper’s fine save while a follow up attempt was cleared off the line. New Mills were defending stubbornly and half time arrived with no further addition to the score.

Three minutes into the second half  Kyle Patton slotted home after the trialist striker had seen a shot pushed out by the New Mills keeper. The trialist then had a header well saved but in the 66th minute Potter’s excellent run down the right and cross into the box gave Thibault Charmey, celebrating his 26th birthday, the opportunity to put the icing on the cake as he slid the ball home from three yards.

A series of substitutions followed from both sides and it was the visitors who created the final opportunity but Tom Flynn denied them a consolation goal with a tremendous fingertip save to keep out a long range shot in the closing stages.

WHITLEY BAY: Flynn, Ravenhill, A Trialist 3, Charmey, Wilkinson, Anderson, Potter, C Patton, A Trialist 9, Kempster, K Patton. second half substitutes: Haley, A Trialist, Hall, Summers, Cunningham.
